Union Church of Pocantico Hills Sunday School

 Sunday School Basics

In the fall, winter, and spring, Union Church offers a robust Sunday School curriculum for the children of members, friends, and guests. Lessons are age-appropriate for children in K–6, with varying activities for children of different ages. Lessons take place during the 11 am worship service in the Sunday School classroom in the back of the church house next to the nursery (available weekly for children younger than kindergarten age).

Trustee James Copland, an ordained Presbyterian elder, has developed our 2017–18 curriculum in consultation with Pastor De Hoff. Mr. Copland serves as the primary Sunday School teacher.

Each lesson has an abridged Biblical reading, using the International Children’s Bible translation, and a discussion of the text. We will learn vocabulary words, and there will be an art and/or craft exercise, as well as writing and analysis exercises for older children.

Although Sunday School lessons are cumulative, each lesson is structured to be accessible for students who have not attended previous weeks.

Winter-Spring 2018 Curriculum

The Winter-Spring Sunday School centers on the Easter story and the birth of the Christian church. The three Sundays before Easter cover the beheading of John the Baptist, Jesus at the Temple, and the Last Supper. After a two-week break (Easter and the Sunday following), we resume with five lessons stretching from Jesus’ arrest to the Pentecost.

January and February lessons build on our fall study of the Exodus by following the Israelites in the wilderness back to Canaan. The final three lessons in May and June cover stories from Israel in the time of the judges.

  • February 18 (Presidents Day)
