Beth Coffman, Editor                                                                            January 2018

…..from the Pastor’s desk

I am writing this January 1, 2018 – incredible that 2017 has come and gone.  So much happened last year in this world of God’s creation – all of it covered by God’s grace.  St. Paul said, “…the good that I would I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do”.  He wrote this to the church in Rome.  It is an insightful summary of human nature.  I don’t know about you, but I am grateful that what I do is covered by the grace of God.  I do not use God’s grace as an excuse for faulty behavior; we do not sin all the more that “grace may abound”.  And so it is that we go forward into 2018 assured of God’s grace.  No, that is not meaningless!  No, it is not an insurance policy covering bad thinking, bad opinions, and bad action!  Yes, it is strengthening and enabling.  God’s grace strengthens me to act; God’s grace enables me to act even in the midst of insecurity and uncertainty.  Thanks be to God!

Our Advent/Christmas celebrations were uplifting to many.  All who were able to attend the Dec. 24th Services know you shared them with people from near and far.  Christmas and Easter celebrate the two great mysteries of the Christian faith – the Incarnation and the Resurrection.  It is wonderful that Union Church can open its doors to let whomever will come – come!  It is a mission!

The Annual Meeting of the Congregation will be held January 21.  As in the past it will be determinative of the nature and strength of Union Church’s mission in the near and not-so-near future.  Will you prayerfully participate?

Last Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 I spoke with those who attended our Lord’s Day Service about “Greeting the Unexpected”.  In part I said that we cannot know the future.  What we can know is that God in Christ goes with us into the future to strengthen us for whatever comes – in Christ we can take it!  Again, Paul said to the church at Rome:  “In Christ we are more than conquerors” – may it be so for each of us!

Many thanks to everyone who generously provided Christmas gifts for children this year though the Grandparents Coalition.  We were able to provide gifts to 70 children this year!  The social workers who collect the gifts are always very grateful.

We are sure there were many smiles on the faces of the children (and grandparents) who received your gifts.

We thank all our members and friends who provided the spectacular poinsettias that adorned our Sanctuary so beautifully during the Christmas season.

On Sunday, December 17th, the youth of the church treated us to a presentation of the Christmas story.  We thank Kim Perry, who coordinated the program, her helpers and especially the kids who did a great job!

Persons who are asked to prepare reports for the Annual Report have been notified.  Reports are due on or before, Sunday, January 7, 2018.  We appreciate your adherence to this deadline so that we will have the time necessary to complete the reports.  Thank you!

The officers/staff Planning Conference will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at the church starting at 9:00 a.m..

The Planning Conference is an opportunity to evaluate our programs and procedures, set up our committees and discuss plans for the coming  year.  It is our hope that all Trustees, Deacons and staff will be available to attend.

The Union Church Pastoral Endowment was created to ensure that Union Church always remains a living church with a pastor  and congregation, and not just be an art museum.  Please consider the Pastoral Endowment when making memorial gifts and in your benevolence giving. and estate planning.

If you would like to request the prayers of the congregation feel free to contact the church office at 914.631.2069 or beth.ucph@ and your requests will be announced during worship services.
