…..from the Pastor’s desk

Jesus once said to his disciples, “I will not leave you comfortless”.  The Greek word, that has been translated for us as “comfortless” means “orphans”.  He left us a church, a community of hope which can be for you and me, and for scores around us who know little about it, an oasis where hope is constantly revived.  It is not a group of those who, as the saying goes, were once upon a time “born again”, but those who, having glimpsed the light of Christ helped one another to be born again and again and again.  We are restored in spirit for the word of God, by our praying together and by the continuous nourishment of the Sacraments.  I like the translation that gives us these words of Jesus.  “Come to me and I will refresh you.”  He will refresh us whether we are nine or ninety-nine.  I have often shared Holy Communion with one confirmed to home or hospital.  As I leave I often think, “…what a gospel we have that makes this friend so radiant, so hopeful, so expectant!”

This is a belief we back by our response to the church, to Union Church, our oasis of hope.  We give, first, of ourselves, then we can but give of our time and our material wealth; for this church stands, in faith and action, for a message of hope for the world, our neighbors, and our own hearts.  “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace by your faith in him, until, by the power of the Holy Spirit, you overflow with hope.”

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

It is with sorrow to tell you of the death of Jeffrey Shumedja, husband of Sue Shumedja.

BAPTISM RENEWAL

The renewal of baptismal vows will be a part of our Lord’s Day Service on Sunday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m.

Baptism is our initiation into the church; our fortification to meet life with all its joy, disappointment, suffering and death “as more than conquerors” through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Theologians call it the “prevenient” grace of God; grace that existed before us; is not not dependent upon us.  We are renewing our acceptance of that grace.
