The Rev. Dr. F. Paul DeHoff, Pastor
Beth Coffman, Editor January 2019
…..from the Pastor’s desk
Sam Chapin’s last Sunday with us is January 13. The psalmist enjoined us to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing”. (Psalm 100:1-2) Sam has accompanied us in our “joyful noise” since August of 2011. We are reluctant for him to go. Sam’s gifts and graces are exceptional! What Sam has done at the pipe organ console and with the choir does not fit the definition of noise, which Webster says is a “sound without agreeable musical quality”. What Sam has done and leads the Congregation and Choir to do is “music to our ears” – sound with a decidedly agreeable musical quality. The ministry of music is not now, and never has been peripheral in the Christian church. A letter from a Roman Governor to the Emperor is one of the earliest scraps of information we have from outside sources about the worship of the first Christians; it reads as follows: “They meet in the early morning and sing a hymn to Christ as God”. St. Francis sang: “All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing”. The Protestant Reformation released a mighty volume of song to celebrate the rediscovered glory and grace of God. “Now thank we all our God,” they sang across Europe, and “A Mighty Fortress Is our God.” Union Church has continued in that great tradition and enabled all of us, and many who were here before us, to make our “joyful noise”. We are children of the Resurrection. Because of the Resurrection there will be song! Thank you Sam for helping us sing!
Rita Chapin has enriched the life of the congregation of Union Church. Rita has been here; Rita has been at Sam’s side; Rita has been in the kitchen; Rita has been of invaluable help in the Clothing Department of the Harvest Fair and Spring Tag Sale! Thank you Rita – we are fortunate to know you and to be loved by you!

UNION CHURCH MUSIC DIRECTOR
As most of you are probably know, Sam Chapin will be retiring as Organist and Choir Director on January 13, 2019. The Board of Trustees will host a reception in appreciation of Sam and Rita’s many contributions to Union Church.
We are pleased to announce that Peter DeHoff will be Interim Organist and Choir Director from Sunday, January 13 through Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019.
In November, the Board of Trustees appointed a search committee to interview applicants and recommend a candidate for the Organist/Choir Director position. Serving on the committee are David Bartholomew, Chair; Susan Angst, Carla DeLandri, Ruth DiLorenzo, Yvette Lin, Greg Perry and Nancy Schellhas. The committee is working with the American Guild of Organists and has received applications from several highly qualified candidates. Plans are set to begin the interview process shortly with a goal of selecting a candidate in the next few months.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR KIDS
Many thanks to everyone who generously provided Christmas gifts for children this year though the Grandparents Coalition. We were able to provide gifts to 60 children this year! The social workers who collect the gifts are always very grateful.
We are sure there were many smiles on the faces of the children (and grandparents) who received your gifts.
We thank all our members and friends who provided the spectacular poinsettias that adorned our Sanctuary so beautifully during the Christmas season.
Persons who are asked to prepare reports for the Annual Report have been notified. Reports are due on or before, Wednesday, January 16, 2019. We appreciate your adherence to this deadline so that we will have the time necessary to complete the reports. Thank you!
The Union Church Pastoral Endowment was created to ensure that Union Church always remains a living church with a pastor and congregation, and not just be an art museum. Please consider the Pastoral Endowment when making memorial gifts and in your benevolence giving. and estate planning.
If you would like to request the prayers of the congregation feel free to contact the church office at 914.631.2069 or beth.ucph@ optimum.net and your requests will be announced during worship services.
“…let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
This space is reserved for anyone who would like to share stories or experiences with us. If you are interested, please contact the church office to submit something for consideration.
